King Middle School serves the most racially, ethnically, and economically diverse neighborhoods in the state of Maine. More than 120 of King's approximately 500 students speak 28 languages and come from 17 countries.

King Middle School is dedicated to the idea that we can create a school where all kids succeed at a high level. The school wide model is Expeditionary Learning.  Students engage in eight to twelve week experiential learning expeditions. These expeditions are in-depth and interdisciplinary in nature and require students to engage in sophisticated research, use the community in authentic ways, and represent their knowledge with high quality products which are presented to legitimate audiences.

Technology is present throughout the school and is used all day and every day. Much of the students work is documented on their online TV on the schools website and is well worth a look.The children use Techology to explore and document all elements of learning, making their own learning objects for their peers and younger learners. This includes digital film and animation.

I joined the children on a special day in history the inaugauration of the 44th President of the US. The school was buzzing with excitement and anticipation. The inauguaration followed a school closure day remembering Martin Luther King  and as I sat with these children I recalled events over the last 40 years and wondered with awe what the next 40 years would bring.

As I looked around the room the faces of the children were lit up, it again brought home to me the importance of giving each child in this world the best opportunity there is to succeed in a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment. King Middle does just that.
